The first saunas originated in Northern Europe around 2000 BCE. They were popularized in the 13th century in Finland with the creation of the word “Savu,” a derivative of a term meaning “in smoke”. Today’s tradition of saunas can be seen in most of the world for their many benefits.
There are two main distinctions in modern saunas: traditional or Finnish saunas and infrared saunas. A conventional sauna will have temperatures ranging from 167°-194° F, whereas infrared saunas range in temperatures from 95°-113°F. An infrared sauna will promote additional muscle growth, fat loss, and lower cholesterol levels. Infrared saunas will also produce a smaller carbon footprint and will heat more safely.
